A cafe is not a restaurant with smaller plates. Almost nobody plans a coffee three weeks ahead, the average spend is a fraction of a dinner, and the decision is made on a phone within a few streets of where the person is standing. That changes what marketing has to do: it has to win proximity searches, over and over, at volume.
For most cafes the Google Business Profile does more work than the website. Primary category, opening hours that are right including bank holidays, photographs that show the room and the counter as they look today, and a reply under every review are what decide whether you appear in the three places Google shows on the map. Our guide to getting into the Google Map Pack covers it properly.
People do not only search for a cafe near me. They search for somewhere to work with wifi, a dog friendly coffee shop, gluten free cake, baby change facilities, outdoor seating, a quiet corner for a meeting. Each of those is a real search with almost no competition, and answering it plainly on your site and profile is usually the fastest traffic a cafe can win.
Coffee pays the rent, brunch pays for the rest. Brunch searches carry far more intent and far more spend than coffee searches, they peak at weekends and they are genuinely competitive, so they deserve their own page with the menu written as text and the hours that it runs stated clearly.
For cafes, Instagram is a discovery channel rather than a brand channel. Posts that show the actual room, the actual counter and the actual street, tagged with the location, do more than a carefully art directed grid, because what people are deciding is whether this is a place they want to sit for forty minutes.
When someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI answers for a good coffee shop nearby or somewhere to work for a few hours, it names venues whose details it can read and trust: a menu written as text rather than trapped in an image, hours that match everywhere they appear, and reviews that are current and answered.
We separate searches for your name from searches by people looking for somewhere to go, and we report on the second group, because that is where new customers come from. Book a free 15 minute strategy call and we will show you which searches you are closest to winning.
Is marketing worth it for a single site cafe? Usually yes, but the work is different from a restaurant. For a single site the highest return is almost always the Google Business Profile, a handful of pages answering the questions people search for, and a small, tightly targeted local ad budget rather than a large campaign.
How do I get my cafe to show on Google Maps? Claim and complete the Google Business Profile, choose the right primary category, keep hours accurate, add current photographs regularly, collect reviews steadily and reply to all of them, and make sure your name, address and phone details are identical everywhere they appear online.
Do cafes need a website at all? Yes, but a small one. A page that states where you are, when you open, what you serve as text rather than a PDF, and what makes you different, is enough to support the Google profile and to be readable by AI assistants.
How long does it take to see results? Google Business Profile improvements often show within weeks for a cafe, because local search moves faster than national search. Paid local ads can bring people in within days.
