How Do I Optimise My Restaurant’s Google Business Profile?
When someone searches “best restaurant near me”, Google does not show them your website first. It shows them a map with three profiles on it. If yours is not one of them, the booking goes to the venue next door. Your Google Business Profile is the single most powerful free marketing asset your restaurant has, and most venues leave it half finished. Here is how to optimise it properly.
Why Your Profile Matters More Than Your Website
Most diners never reach your website at all. They search, see the map pack, look at photos and reviews, and either call, book or get directions straight from the profile. Google reports that a complete profile gets around seven times more clicks than an empty one. For restaurants the effect is even stronger, because hungry people decide fast and choose whichever venue looks open, busy and well loved.
Get the Basics Right First
Before anything clever, make sure the foundations are complete. Your name should be your real trading name with no keywords stuffed in. Your address, phone number and opening hours must be accurate and must match your website exactly. Add special hours for bank holidays before Google asks. Link your booking system so the Reserve button works. A profile with a wrong phone number or out of date hours does not just lose that one booking. It teaches Google your data cannot be trusted, and your rankings suffer for it.
Choose the Right Categories
Your primary category is the strongest ranking signal on the whole profile. If you are an Italian restaurant, “Italian restaurant” beats plain “Restaurant” every time, because it matches what people actually search. Then add secondary categories for everything else you are: cocktail bar, brunch restaurant, private dining room. Each one opens up a new set of searches you can appear in.
Add Photos That Sell Tables
Diners choose with their eyes. Profiles with recent, appetising photos get dramatically more direction requests and calls than profiles with a logo and one dark shot of the bar. Upload your best dishes, the room at full glow, the front of the venue so people can find you, and your team. Then keep adding a few every month. Google favours profiles that look alive, and so do diners.
Get Reviews and Reply to Every One
Reviews are the biggest trust signal on your profile and a genuine ranking factor. Make asking part of service: a card with the bill, a link in your follow up email, a simple ask from the manager when a table clearly loved the night. Then reply to every review, good and bad. A calm, generous reply to a poor review wins more future bookings than ten five star ratings, because everyone thinking of booking reads it.
Keep the Profile Active
Google rewards profiles that show signs of life. Post your new menu, your Sunday roast, your Christmas booking dates. Answer the questions in the Q&A section before a stranger answers them wrong. Update your menu link whenever it changes. Ten minutes a week is enough, and it compounds, because every update is a fresh signal that your venue is open, busy and worth ranking.
